Solidscape Launches Guest Blog Program
In 2016 Solidscape was proud to present Alexandria Matossian, Designer and Creative Director of Bostonian Jewelers and one of the industry’s early CAD CAM adopters, as our first guest blogger. Alexandria enlightened us with her experience and expertise in jewelry design and restoration. The program launched on April 4th with her first post, How has our 3D printer changed the chain of manufacturing?

Solidscape Opens the Door for Artists who Work in Another Dimension
A thrilling gallery of jewelry and fine art highlights the talented designers who submitted their designs to Solidscape’s 2016 jewelry design programs.
Design Competition at Baselworld
Every year Solidscape gears up to present the Design Competition at Baselworld. We are delighted to see the creativity grow with each annual event. The past two competitions introduced a new category for fine art alongside jewelry. In 2016, many stunning designs ranging from intricate rings to beautiful bowls to detailed statues wowed the judges. The finalists and winners can be seen in our gallery page.
Fabio Esposito, Solidscape President and CEO stated, “This year’s winning designers have again pushed the boundaries of complex geometries and organic shapes that are impossible to produce through traditional hand carving techniques.”
“The Spotlight is on You” Jewelry Design Contest with JewelryThis
Solidscape and JewelryThis teamed up in 2015 to present a monthly jewelry design contest. In March 2016, the final winner was announced. Othmar Wicke’s intricate snake cuff bracelet that could only be printed by a Solidscape High Precision 3D Printer traveled to Baselworld to be on display.
3D-SYSTEM, LLC’s Best Jewelry Design Project Competition at JUNWEX Moscow
This year our partner, 3D-SYSTEM, LLC, launched a Best Jewelry Design Competition of their own to celebrate complex jewelry design only capable with Solidscape 3D Printing technology. The finalists were displayed at jewelry trade show JUNWEX Moscow. The Platinum Award Winner, Nicolas Delouche from France, expressed his thankfulness that 3D design contests such as these give credit to CAD jewelry designers.
“It’s hard to have an opinion of my work. [The] aim was to have pieces with some complexity for 3D print. Detail is a part of it. That’s clear that with systems a part of jewelry is changing. A 3D design seems to have less value than a traditional build one. In my opinion it’s an open door to people who are creative to bring pieces in another dimension, with less physical and time constraint. So happy that people and the jury give credits to this work!”

Customers at the Forefront at JCK Las Vegas
In June, Solidscape was honored to have Alexandria Matossian as our Featured Designer at our JCK Las Vegas booth. Saturday through Sunday Alexandria and her husband Hagop Matossian presented their experiences and advice to help their fellow jewelers embrace their creativity and make the leap to using CAD. Topics included “Making the transition from bench jeweler to 3D CAD jeweler,” “Reinventing antique and estate jewelry using CAD,” and “Creating 3 Color rings—it starts in your head.” You can watch the presentations on our new Jewelry Youtube Channel.
We were also thrilled to meet many familiar faces! Carolina Moraes from Studio Carolina who entered the Baselworld Design Competition stopped by to show off her Star Ring. Solidscape users Carlos and Galina Zamora of Tech Designs and Jules Barba from JB Diamonds also stopped by the booth to say hello. Finally, Dror Habusha from JewelryThis paid us a visit again to promote how the company works with designers to provide online access to custom designed pieces.
Carrera Casting Launches Jewelry Best Practices Series
Whether you’re an experienced CAD jewelry designer or just getting started, you can always learn new best practices. Solidscape teamed up with Carrera Casting to present a new Jewelry Best Practices video series to help you take your jewelry design and production knowledge to new levels. Solidscape extends a big thank you to Master Jeweler and Carrera Casting’s CAD/CAM director Tom Manos for sharing his knowledge and expertise in custom jewelry design and technology. Tom started out making models by hand and became one of the early CAD/CAM adopters in the jewelry industry. He has worked with a wide variety of design programs. According to Carrera, “If your CAD file is not behaving like you want, Tommy will be able to tell you why.”
