By Alexandria Matossian, Designer and Creative Director of Bostonian Jewelers and one of the industry’s early CAD CAM adopters. We’re very excited and honored to have her present at our booth as our “Featured Designer” at JCK Las Vegas this week, June 3-6!

A sampling of Live 3D ModelsThis year I was invited by the good folks over at Solidscape to join them as a “Featured Designer” at their booth during the JCK show in Las Vegas. I am honored to be attending and looking forward to my role during the show as well as discovering all that is new with other exhibitors.

In preparation for JCK2016 show, I wanted to highlight some of the design challenges and techniques I have discovered over the years during my transition from bench to CAD jeweler. It takes years to face various scenarios of design and manufacturing to feel confident in the CAD/CAM process. To this day, we continue to hand fabricate parts and assemble our designs by hand. My hope is to bridge the gap in the approach to jewelry manufacturing. The topics I will cover at JCK are:

  • How to approach multi color metal jewelry – A puzzle game
  • Re-inventing vintage jewelry – learning from the previous generation
  • To sprue or not to sprue – Who’s in control?
  • Making the transition from Bench jeweler to CAD designer. You are not alone out there

CAD designing allows for a full and continuous portfolio of everything you have ever created! So pulling a few examples to bring to this year’s show was a bit overwhelming Alexandria Matossian's Elvin Ringfor me. When we complete a project, the file is given a name and tucked away by month and by year. Unless the design is one for production, it is archived. I spent days reviewing my body of work for the past 17 years and narrowed the selection to ones that would offer more educational nuggets for anyone considering designing with a computer.
